In the future, ever more people worldwide will live in cities rather than in rural areas. The city will therefore become the decisive place for the development of more sustainable ways of living, eating, working, and moving. The city of the future should be a climate-friendly, pleasant place to live, where every care is taken to conserve our natural resources.
The Berlin Prinzessinnengärten (Princess gardens) embody a new urban place of learning, intended to increase biological, social and cultural diversity in the neighbourhood, and pioneer a new way of living together in the city.
Throughout the whole year, we offer guided tours through the Prinzessinnengarten. We will show you how, with the help of recycled materials, compost and seeds, we grow over 500 varieties of vegetables throughout the season. If you like, we can focus on a specific topic in our tour, such as compost, urban planning, or agro-biodiversity.
Workshops on these and a variety of related topics are available, welcoming individuals as well as groups.
Prinzessinnengärten is where locals and guests from all walks of life come together to experiment with and discover aspects of organic food production and biodiversity, climate protection and climate change, and learn about healthy eating, sustainable living and a future-oriented urban lifestyle.
Prinzessinnengärten was launched as a pilot project in the summer of 2009 at Moritzplatz in Berlin Kreuzberg, a huge site which had been a wasteland for over half a century.
