The »  Library of African Cinema is North America's primary source of African videos - feature films and documentaries both. African filmmakers capture Africa's past, scrutinize its present, and imagine its future, enabling viewers to see Africa through African eyes. (Some titles are also available on 35mm film.) You'll find the complete Library of African Cinema video collection arranged here by topic. We also offer some background resources that may enhance your use of the videos.

» Cry Freedom - Teaching Unit by Kathy McLean (Australia). In the unit, Kathy details strategies for teachers to use before, during and after viewing. This unit is easily adaptable for use with other films. - Cry Freedom (1987, 157 minutes) has been described as a dramatized political documentary and can just as easily be seen as a film biography. Director Sir Richard Attenborough based the film on the real life characters of Stephan Biko and white South African editor Donald Woods. The film's factual base serves three major purposes: first to tell the life story of Stephan Biko; second, to show the relationship between Woods and Biko and; third, to show the oppressive political climate of South Africa at the time. » Cry Freedom II - This unit of work was prepared by Daniel Konzelman, a secondary teacher.
